Flashpoint emerges from the Caves and docks at the Port

The Caribbean's premier film festival has upped and moved into the metropolitan of Kingston from the scenic auspice of The Caves, Negril. Thursday, June 5 – Sunday, June 8 will see the historical and picturesque setting of Port Royal hosting the 2008 Flashpoint Film Festival, which is guaranteed to be one for the history books.

Now in its third year, the Flashpoint Film Festival is enthusiastic about the new venue. "Although the Caves Resort in Negril is a wonderful location and the festival has been a great success there, in order for Flashpoint to grow we have decided to bring it closer to Kingston, the hub of the emerging film industry, and make it more accessible to the Jamaican people," said Paul Bucknor, principal of Firefly Films, organizers of the festival.

In addition to a new venue, the festival will premiere four Jamaican feature length films, a first in Jamaica's history. The three features include Better Mus' Come, The Candy Shop, Pothole and a revised version of Goathead, a film whose short was shown at the last Festival. Better Mus' Come stars award winning American writer, director, and actor, Roger Guenveur Smith, who starred alongside Denzel Washington in the screen bio-pic American Gangster. It is an explosive period film based on true events, set against the backdrop of the political turmoil of 1970s Jamaica.

Already a film competition was launched that will see the winner directing their very own short film, guided by producers Firefly Films, to also premiere at the Festival. The competition began on Tuesday, April 1 runs until Thursday, May 1.
